"A solid wash of payne's gray with some thalo blue was laid down for the sky. When that was at a point in drying, I added some salt to the sky and let that dry. Next I added yellow ochre to the foreground. Using a temporary mask of paper I covered the sky and splattered yellow ochre, burnt siena, burnt umber. They add a texture and "energy" centers to the painting. After all was dry, I went in and added the grass with sap green and a little hookers green. The mountains were put in with thalo purple... or alizarin crimson with a bit of payne's gray." -James Metcalf
